Human-Centered Computing Comprehensive Review Policy

  1. The HCC comprehensive review covers both the HCC reading list and the Extended HCC reading list as well as Methodology and Analysis.
  2. Students must notify the Graduate Program Director by email no later than the first week of the semester during which they plan to complete the comprehensive review. All students taking the exam in a given semester will be given a "doctoral exam integrative question". Students will submit a written answer by email to the Graduate Program Director within a month of receiving the question. The Oral exam (explained later) must be taken in the same semester as when the answer to the doctoral integrative question is submitted.
  3. The oral exam is a closed exam consisting of two parts: In the first part the student makes an oral presentation based on the work completed in one of the independent studies. This will consist of approximately 30-40 minutes of presentation and about 20 minutes of questions and answers.
  4. In the second part the doctoral exam committee will ask questions to the examinee based on the student's response to the integrative question. This should last about an hour.
  5. The doctoral exam committee will consist of five faculty members including the student's mentor and one member of the Graduate Committee.
  6. Time table:

In most cases, the exam committee will make the decision in 24 hours and the notify the student. If the examinee fails the exam, the student can retake the exam a second time in the following semester. In the case of a second failure the student may be dismissed from the program.

  7. The examinee will submit a copy of the student's dossier at the time of scheduling the exam. The dossier will include:
