Date Posted: - 7/25/2008
The Department of Information Systems will now offer a certificate in Project Management for Information Technology (PMIT) beginning with the fall 2008 semester. The new certificate responds to an ever-growing need in the IT field for Project Managers and professionals with a background in project management-an in-demand skill set for IS students and one of the fastest growing professional disciplines in the US.
Currently there are more than 160 countries relying on this field to create and update IT systems for business and government organizations due to rising costs and complexity for large-scale IT projects. According to Computerworld magazine's online publication, July 15, 2008, Project Management is ranked 11th among the top 20 “recession-proof” professions offering “very good employment prospects…” The employment outlook for project managers referenced in Computerworld comes from a July ranking published by JobFox.com.
The certificate, open to all majors, is designed primarily for Information Systems BS majors and can be included within the current degree program. The 12-credit curriculum combines existing IS courses and will allow students to gain critical knowledge needed to lead successful projects. The courses comprising the certificate are as follows:
- IS 436 - Structured Systems Analysis and Design
- IS 437 - Applied System Design
- IS 438 - Project Management
- IS 439 - Advanced Project Management
Degree-seeking students enrolled in the certificate will also obtain essential skills in key areas such as systems analysis and design, and project modeling, planning, scheduling and controlling. It is anticipated that students adding this certificate to their existing skill sets provided by their majors will not only increase their level of focused study in the area of Project Management and Information Systems but the certificate will also enhance their employment opportunities in this growing discipline.
